[C320-list] Winterizing

Jim,
I just winterized a house in the Berkshires and use a wet/dry shop vac
instead of the compressor that I used in previous years. Found the shop vac
did a much better job and was easier to deal with. While the exhaust of the
shop vac does not have a lot of pressure it does have a lot of volume which
is really all you need to push the water out of the pipes, valves and tanks.
As Jeff said it is also really convenient to sucking up any water laying
around in the bilges.
Not sure I understand your comment about the water that is a couple inches
below the drain tap. The vacuum in either suck or exhaust mode will not be
able to get water that is contently lying below a drain. This would be true
for a compressor as well.

Hi Jeff. I always read your posts which are consistently helpful. I'm
surprised to hear that a shop vac has enough suction to drain the hot water
heater. Like you, I've always used my compressor, blowing air in through
the pressure relief valve and letting it drain from the lower tap through a
short hose length into the bilge. Will the shop vac really pull all of the
fluid from the tank, including the bottom inch or two below the drain tap?
