Have in-boom furling and my experience over the past 11 months is
excellent---the Leisure furl people put on a heavy-duty gas-spring
vang that holds the boom at about 87 degrees, yet can be pulled down
with the boom vang while on a broad reach or running, then goes up to
correct angle when released. Never had a problem furling "true",
i.e., not rolling forward or aft. I keep a light tension on the
topping lift, but really have had no occasion to use it (and
gas-spring vang won't let the boom lift up). After hoisting the mail,
you use the furling line to tension the foot of the sail, snugging it
to the in-boom roller, then just sail off. Wonderful system.
