[C320-list] trouble starting engine

This summer our engine was not turning over every time I tried to start it.
Other times it did fine. Finally when entering a complicated harbor under
cruising chute, it wouldn't start at all. There was a good marine repair
shop in the harbor, I explained the problem to him on the radio. He
immediately said the solenoid was shot. He came out to the boat pulled the
whole starter, took it back to his shop, replaced the solenoid and rebuild
the starter. The starter needed new brushes etc. He also changed the starter
button on the console, putting in a new and higher quality button. Good as
new for about $400.00.
We have the Perkins engine with over 2000 hours, the solenoid & starter were
just worn out. Now for that Hurth gearbox, that doesn't want to slip into
forward reliably anymore.... that's a job for next spring.

I had the same problem with my old 1959 Austin Healy years ago. Turned out
the starter needed rebuilding.

Hey all,
Been following/enjoying this list-serve for a while now but first time
submitting. Recently bought Hull #1 (still unamed) w some friends - has
various issues. so I actually have a lot of different questions. I'll start
with this one. Engine will not start on just the starter battery. It will
start by using all (house + starter battery). Tried cleaning all
connections, replacing the starter battery and replacing the battery
switch - all failed. It grinds, comes close but not enough to start.
Mechanic suggested replacing all wire with heavier gauge but surveyor
thought that gauge was adequate. The boat has an inverter but I don't think
that's an issue b/c the moment I installed the new starter battery I tried
the engine and it wouldn't turn over. Any thoughts? Also, is there some
organized archive in which i can search for previous topics (ie changing
head hoses, leaks in aft cabin)?
