Up here in frozen Ontario I just suck pink A/F thru from the aft tank 'til
the hot tap runs pink.  Never had a problem.

I simply remove the cold line to the water and hook it to the hot water 
lines. Easy to do with whale fittings. Then drain water heater. I use two
gal of 
pink for the water lines. Nothing in the water heater since it is dry. You
have 
to remove the cabinet to do this but it is quick.
