Mike/All-
I saw your recent note about C320IA BoatUS group membership. I went thru the same thing last year, and I just found a scrap of paper from last year and it had these notes on it. I am certain a call to would straighten the matter out.

Bruce,

Not a dumb question at all. Since the elbow that Catalina custom made on my boat is a single piece, the first time I replace the elbow I have to replace all three. Once this is done I will only have to worry about the part downstream from the water as you suggest. For a long time I thought I was the one missing something when I tried to get a 'stock' elbow only to realize that it was unique to my boat. I haven't found any other hulls that have this custom elbow yet. I will post a picture when I get a chance...

Regards,

Jon

I do not understand the "Custom Made" part. The elbow is a standard Yanmar
part. Jon are you the first owner?

Better be careful with making insurance claims - one claim can get you canceled.

Well in 14 years without a claim with this insurer, they can cancel me if
they want. I probably need a good reason to shop for insurance anyway.

FYI,

I did a little shopping and found a Suzuki 2.5hp that is water cooled (quiet) and weighs 30 pounds. That's only 2 pounds more than the 2hp Honda, and I can buy it locally for $215 less than the Honda.

  Jeff,
Louder, yes however "very loud" I would suggest is a salesman's miss
  characterization.

Out here in CA the engine is doing really well since it is illegal to sell
two strokes. I did by a one gallon fuel tank with the auto fill top. We
keep it in the dinghy when we go off exploring. It is seldom needed as the
engine is very miserly with fuel unless you are running it flat out. With
our setup the last 1/4 of throttle just seems to increase the noise and fuel
consumption with out a significant increase in speed.

  Bruce,

I'm considering the Honda 2hp engine or a heavier Tohatsu 3.5. At Strictly
Sail a Tohatsu salesman told me that the Honda would be very loud because it
is air cooled. Does it seem louder than other small outboards?

    JeffC,
We have the Honda 2 hp and I believe it comes in at 27 or 28#'s. Very
  easy
to lift up to the rail. Also small enough that you could probably store
  it
in the bottom of the port lazaret. That said we usually leave it on the
    dinghy up on the davits.

    JeffH,

It looks like you found a very good deal at $999 for a Zoom 310. I'd
  caution
that iBoats prices aren't always the best. Their current "truckload sale"
price for the 2006 Zoom 310 Aero isn't a great a deal. After you add a
  seat
(optional on a 2006 Zoom, standard in 2007), you save less than 10% off
  the
price of the 2007. Not what you'd expect for old stock/clearance prices. I
shopped for a Zodiac last fall and bought a 2007 Zoom 260 Aero locally for
$1399. iBoats lists it for $1550. After taxes, iBoats is about $60 more
    expensive than the local guy.

Now I need a good price on a 2 to 3.5 hp outboard. More importantly, I
  need
a clever way to hang the motor somewhere low on the transom of the 320. I
don't like the idea of lifting it to the usual position at the top of the
    stern rail.

      Hi All,

We were in the market for a new(-ish) dinghy recently. I happened
  across
    a
      sale at iboats.com.

They're selling NEW 2006 Zodiac Zoom 310S for $999.00 with free shipping
    in
      the Cont. US.
It's 10'2" with wood floor, inflatable keel and 16" tubes. MSRP is
  over
      $1600.

Seemed like a good deal so I bought one. Hope it floats now...

Since a comment was made about making an insurance claim. I would
like to relate my very positive experience with
Chubb Insurance. In late October this past fall there was a
hurricane intensity no-name storn. The bare anchor roller cut the
dual pennants
at the mooring, and as a result my C310, Ivy Girl, ended up on the
beach. I did manage to keep the the boat off the seawall by
putting out
a 33 LB claw anchor at low tide just after the beaching. I spoke
with the local Boat U.S. tow affiliate then called Chubb.
They worked out the finances to have Ivy Girl taken off the beach by
the local Boat U.S. tow affiliate as well as contacting my local yard.
Chubb assigned a surveyor, and worked with the yard to asses the
damage. Chubb did not question the estimate of $38,000, and sent a
down payment to the yard so repairs would started immediately. The
assigned surveyor kept close watch on the repairs, as did I.
Ivy Girl was repaired over the winter, and Chubb sent the final
payment last week after the okay by the surveyor.
I paid the annual boat insurance policy in November when it was due.
I have had prior Claims with Chubb
regarding personal property, and they were very quick to cover my
losses. I do pay more for boat and home insurance coverage with
Chubb, but the extra premium is well worth it after hearing bad
experience with claims with lower cost policies.

All:

This isn't about a Catalina so please forgive me, but it is about
sailing and I need advice.

Late this August, I have to bring my fathers boat (1984 Cape Dory 28),
hull speed 6 knots, from Barnegat, NJ to Portsmouth, NH. I figure it's
about 325 miles; I could be corrected. I've got 9 days to do this,
which includes two days of road travel, so only 7 on water days. Slim,
but possible.

I need input on what's the quickest/best way; go through the Long
Island Sound, or go up the outside of Long Island? Marina info would
be appreciated as well 'cause we're going to have to 'marina hop'.

I took a two week cruise last year; on return found my dinghys 8 hp
Honda (3 mo old) stolen. Filed a claim with Boat US per their
instructions, got a check a couple weeks later for $1900 (replacement
cost less $100 deductible). No rebukes, no cancellations. True, I
didn't get my 10% premium discount for this year because I wasn't
'incident free' last year, but that's fair enough.

Re SailCare
We had our 2001 OEM sail refurbished by sail care this winter. The sail
looks beautiful.

BUT

The sail shrunk. Today, I cut 3 inches off the bottom Batten, 2 Inches off
the next, and 1 inch off the next. The top batten sticks out a bit but I
left it.

I'll report on sail shape when next we sail.

The sails on our '99 weren't in bad shape, but were somewhat
mildewed. The local loft washed them last winter and that didn't
impact the stains much.

This winter I sent them to Sail Care (http://www.sailcare.com/). I'm
normally skeptical of approaches like this, but I've had sails they
worked on before (done by the previous owner on my previous boat) and
the result were real good.

I got the sails back a couple weeks ago and went to bend them on
today. They look great. Sail Care also did a lot of work I didn't
know they'd do - replacing the velcro on the batten pockets and
replacing the headboard, for example. They also replaced all the
slides on the main with beautiful new articulating (SS?) slides.

Unfortunately, these new slides are the wrong size. They're too big
for the slot on the mast.

I expect Sail Care will handle this w/o problem, but I want to know
what the right kind of slides are. The manual suggests it is an
Isomat spar though it has a Charleston Spars sticker on the boom. The
likely Isomat candidates (http://www.rigrite.com/Spars/Isomat_Spars/
Isomat_Masts/isomat_Mast_Specs_&_Comp.html#Isomat_Mast_Sections) seem
to all specify "3/4" flat slides (A006M)".

Doing a quick web search for those turns up http://www.sail-
making.com/dbimgs/page78_79_80us.pdf, which says the A006M has a
waist of 3/8". The slot on the mast only measured 3/16" wide today,
so something isn't right.

So, what is the mast section on my boat, and what are the proper slides?

Thanks.
