The hood furler seems to have a smaller drum than the Schaefer, so this may
be necessary on the more mature boats.

The reason for removing the core from the furling line is to allow more
turns on the drum.  By the time you have pulled in the cored line to where
the core is removed, there is less of the jib exposed to the wind. 
Therefore you do not need all the strength of the full line.  Our
instructions for the Hood furler advise to remove the core for the first
1/3rd of the line.
