Denny,

Fully agree with you--no one should ever just ask the list for "what size
asym do you have"...have a sail maker come out to your boat, have him
watch how you sail, chat with him as to what type of sailing you want to
do with it---racing only, cruising only, club or buoy racing or a combo of
all of the above.

With his knowledge of local conditions, he will suggest what I consider
even more important than size (if that's possible!), cloth weight. That
can be so different from area to area and it can make a huge difference on
your customer/sailing  experience.

Don't take what might seem as an easy way out in asking the list and
expecting a "correct" answer...invest in some due diligence with a
reputable sail maker...

You should probably talk to a local sailmaker about the measurements, how
and where you want to sail, etc. I have both kinds of spinnakers and find
that I can sail much deeper with the symmetrical sail, but it's a lot more
trouble, requiring more and pretty well trained crew. You should sail this
sail on someone else's boat, at least several times, before investing in
one. The rigging's more expensive and it's quite a bit more complicated.

The gennaker will sail deeper with higher wind, but with higher wind, you
may not need it, especially if you have a whisker pole. I have the tacker
and snuffer, both made by ATN (see www.atninc.com) and they work pretty
well. If you have the foam luff in your headsail, you should probably
upsize
the tacker or it'll get stuck on the fat furled headsail. The snuffer is
fabulous when trying to get the sail down in windy conditions. Getting any
of them down is really the trick.

Last time we sailed the wind was dead douwn wind and our 135 Genoa would
not
fill at anything better than 120 and it kept flopping when the wind
dropped.

Looking into an asymetric with a snuffer and a tacker.

1. What success has anyone had with this kind of system?

2. How close to dead downwind can you sail?

3. Is the system simple enough to deploy that you pull it out of the bag
often enough to make it worthwhile?

4. Looking for dimensions of the asymetric, source and about how much the
asymetric cost.

Does anyone have one for sale??
