[C320-list] Packing size

Thanks to the advice given here I changed the packing in "Camelot" huill # 322 (1996).
The screw trick worked great, used a straight awl to remove the packing and used 3 rings of 1/4 in packing.
In-the-water was no problem -- about a quart of water a minute was easily handled by the bilge pump.

Thanks Kirk -- I bought an easy out, but as it turns out there was just
enough of the screws (all three) protruding that I was able to back them out
with a small pliers. Hopefully I can get the replacement screws and be back
in business. I got lucky on this one!

The last time I changed the impeller I installed a " SPEEDSEAL " impeller
cover. It is thick brass with a " O " ring seal instead of a thin gasket.
They make them for all types of pump sizes and brands.
It has large knob type bolts that you thighten by hand. It comes with extra
o-rings and a extra knob screw. A real heavy duty set up.

The manual for my 2000, hull 690, indicated 3 rings of 3/16" packing (Ref pg.
45, drawing undated), but I noticed that the newer manual calls for 2 rings of
1/4" packing (Ref Pg. 46, drawing revised 4/2/2002). So, I had both sizes ready
when I hauled last week.
Turns out the 1/4" worked fine even though I was skeptical about only having 2
rings in there. I dug out 3 rings of what I suspect was 3/16" flax packing and I
used the Gore-Tex GFO packing as the replacement. After about a 3 hr run-in
period, it is virtually drip free and the gland assembly remains cool to the
touch.

If you can fit 1/4" into your stuffing box then that is likely the correct size
for your stuffing box. There is a lot of circumstantial evidence on this list
that even though the manual talks about 3 rings of 3/16" it isn't correct for
many folks. I know it wasn't correct for me. But 'n' years back I believed it
and did put in 3 rings of 3/16". When I removed it to replace with GFO a few
years ago, the cross section of the rings I was removing was now rectangular
rather than square. The long dimension was 1/4" and the short dimension was
quite a bit less than 3/16". -bill----- Original Message ----From:

Karl,
I'm glad you dug up the revised manual info. My boat (859) was built in May
2002 and came with a manual saying 3/16" packing. This is the 1st evidence I've
heard documenting 1/4" for my age boat!

Wow
Good deal for you! A little luck goes a long way.
Did you get a new gasket for the cover when you reassembled it all? The
cover on my pump leaks a very small amount so I need to change the gasket at
some point.

The gasket is on the way. Is there a trick to changing the impeller (how do
you compress the blades to fit them into the housing?)? I'll reassemble the
thing once these parts arrive.

Getting the new impeller in presents no problem. Removing the old one is
sometimes harder. Use two screwdrivers and the old one pops right out.

I've found that the easiest way to compress the impeller blades is to
use a larger size hose clamp. If you tighten it to just the right
diameter the impeller can be worked into place rather easily. It takes
a bit of trial and error however, and you want to be careful to avoid
damaging the impeller blades.
By the way, I second the SpeedSeal suggestion. I hated dealing with all
those little screws before I made this change. They are a bit pricy,
but if you ever have to change impellers in a tight spot you will think
it a reasonable investment, I'm sure.

I use plastic cable ties. Less chance of damaging the blades and easy to
remove.
