Thanks for that! My boat is in Sydney too, (Careel Bay). Maybe treading on 
the panel was the problem. I will look into the replacement, or maybe a 
portable unit as also suggested.

Dick  my boat is a 1996 hull number 421 also fitted with a solar panel which 
failed after about 2yrs. Catalina still had a few in stock so I was able to 
get a replacement. However I now threaten all crew members with keel hauling 
etc if anyone treads on it and consequently I have had no problems since 
.It's probably also helped by the high proportion of sunlight and minimal 
rain in our Sydney climate
