[C320-list] Steering noise

Thanks to all for your replies. Jeff, how did you tighten the cable? I have inspected the cable from all available spots and I can not find a turnbuckle or any other way to control the tension of the cable.

Thanks again for the reply

You might want to remove the inspection plate cover over the rudder post and see what the post is doing when the noise occurs. When I encountered the clunk, motoring at 6+ in heavy seas, I could see the rudder post working back and forth a bit, in time with the noise. After haul-out I compared the play in my rudder to that of other boats and didn't find a significant difference. I tightened the cables to Edson's specs, and after a full season, the noise did not reappear.

There was a thread on this problem a while back. I have the noise as well,
but mine sounds and feels like a bit of a clunk, and only happens under
heavier steering load, like putting the wheel over. Once the "noise"
happens, it's gone for a while.

I suspect my steering cables might be a tad loose, and might be catching or
trying to climb up and out of a pulley somewhere?

    Mike,
I wonder if your rudder log has worn and what you are hearing is the shaft
moving around in the log. When you are close hauled the rudder is probably
just like the sail in that when it stalls it will move around.
The only way I know to diagnose a warn log is when the boat is on the hard.

Last season I started to hear a, as best I can describe, "metallic click"
somewhere in the steering system. The "tick" noise occurs in heavy wind
when on a close haul/port tack. When the rudder has resistance and you
apply more by pointing upwind, I hear a tick noise. It only happens when
turning to port. There is no vibration or slippage felt at the wheel when
    this occurs.

I have checked and lubed the cables and I have inspected as much as I can
see. I can not find the source.

At this time the noise is simply a nuisance but I would like to address it
and make sure that I don't have problem in the developmental stages.

Has anyone ever had this situation and if you have, how did you address it?

    thanks

Do you need a replacement? I found that once I replaced the vent hose and
cleaned the plastic cap in warm soapy water the cap was odor-free along with
    the boat.

Doing perhaps the worst job I can find this winter. changing head hoses.
very old and stinky on my boat. The holding tank has a hose going up to a
thru-hull vent. theres a plastic cap on that outside the boat. I cannot
find a replacment for that anywhere. Any ideas? people have suggested
websites but I cannot find the product on those sites.
