Bruce,
I'm right across the river from you at Bowleys Quarters. My boat is also a 99'.
When I first purchased the boat I attended a diesle class at Tidewater marina. They taught me a lot about the care and feeding of the engine, number 1 rule, don't baby it. They also suggested using only SAE30 oil in both the engine and transmission. Their only caution was not to overfill. They suggested that I cover the tip of the transmission dip stick with clear nail polish, to make it easier to see the level. The transmission holds very little oil, I change it once a year.

Sincerely,
Herb Creech
