Nick,
Absent some unusual configuration, glo-plugs (when present) don't need to be
left 'on'.
A standard ignition switch has 'off', 'on' and 'start' positions. It can be
wired so that the glo-plugs (when present) are energized when the key is
held in the 'start' position. The 'on' position is wired to energize the
'start' button, engine instruments and warning buzzers.

On our later model 320's with the Yanmar engine there are no glo-plugs and
the 'start' position on the switch is not wired.
