[C320-list] Reefing Block inside boom

On 2001 Isle of Wight #851 the boom is rigged with a single sliding block
with a becket and it is connected to the outhaul.
The line runs from the sheave on the forward end of the boom, around the
sliding block, back to a fixed block in the forward section of the boom and
is tied off to the shackle of the sliding block. Then a line is run from
the becket to the clew of the mainsail for outhaul control. This gives a
3:1 mechanical advantage for the outhaul.

It doesn't make sense to me to try to use this system for reefing in any way

The reefing line on IOW goes from a block at port side base of the mast, up
thru a block at the luff reefing cringle, down to a sheave at the forward
end of the boom, straight thru the boom to the sheave at the aft end of the
boom, up thru a block at the leech reefing cringle and is tied off at the
strap shackle at the bottom of the boom under the main clew.

We put a sharpie mark on the main halyard, and to reef the main, go head to
wind, drop the main to the sharpie mark on the halyard, lock the halyard
rope clutch and haul in on the reefing line.
We have no second reef line on our boat, but I would run the same kind of
line on the starboard side of the boom. There is a messenger line on IOW to
the starboard sheaves on the boom. I don't know if I would add blocks to
the second reef cringles because of the added weight to them main that high
up on the sail. Maybe at the luff but not at the leech.

Bill:

One way to check to see if the other reef has the block inside the boom
is to see if there is a knot protruding at the aft end of the boom. As I
recall, the line was knotted at the end of the boom, then extended to the
block and then up to the reefing cringle and back down to the boom it
self. Another way would be with the sail flaked on the boom, pull on the
reef line at one end of the boom and see if you get the same amount of
travel in the line at the other end.
