I agree with Chris. My experience is that the engine hours advance whenever the key is ON. In other words, it measures time regardless of engine rpm. This is not a Hobbs meter like we have in aircraft. A Hobbs meter measures elasped time in the presence of some minimal oil pressure.

There is one other possibility.I believe the engine hours count up even if the engine isn't running but the key is turned on.  So your engine might not really have that many hours on it.
