[C320-list] Target Coatings / Woodworking Guide

Check out Target's EM8000 product discussed on page 13-14 of the PDF. It's
essentially a 2-part pre-catalyzed varnish that's extremely hard and
chemical resistant. Probably has about the same UV resistance as Epiphanes
exterior products, but harder given that it's a cross-linked product, rather
than just a one-part varnish. It's more expensive than epiphanes, but a
superior product if you're refinishing inside woodwork and want a
beautifully matched quality finish.

If you do use Epiphanes (and I'm not discouraging it), be sure you thin it
properly because it's really too thick to use right out of the can if you're
looking for a professional quality finish. I noticed that the first brush
stroke I tried on a test board.

In either case, be sure to use the exact kind of brushes they call for. It
matters alot. Use the wrong brush and you might as well be using Ace
Hardware spray on lacquer.

I used 4 coats of Epiphanes Rubbed Finish varnish on my new starboard-side
electrical panel, (photos in the gallery) It's pretty but doesn't match the
rest of the woodwork very well in my opinion, because the gloss level is
different. If I had it to do over, I'd use the Target products with a
quality brush instead. But that's my subjective opinion there. I'm
probably the only one who notices it doesn't match. :)

The water-based finishes work very well for touchup. However, nothing comes
close to Epiphanes Rubbed-Finish Varnish for look and durability if you are
refinishing and not just touching-up.

Joe,

I've used Varathane's water based varnish to touch up door/drawer frames,
fiddles and hand holds. It flows nicely and matches very well.

Thanks Jeff, I think these may be great for spray applications in a
Factory
but leave a lot to be desired for touch up refinishing. Has anyone
refinished their main cabin with another type of brush on Varnish? Can it
be
applied right over the existing Target finish? My main cabin around the
companionway needs refinishing because of salt water sea spray.
Any ideas other than the Target coating?

  Hello,

I know this may be *slightly* off topic, but a woodworker named Jerry
Work has written a fantastic article about using Target Coatings finishes.
These are the materials used by Catalina on the interior woodwork of our
boats. Anyone planning to do woodwork upgrades inside, might be
interested
  in this article.

I found it very helpful anyway.

  Cheers,
