[C320-list] Improving the galley floor

Its funny you mentioned Catalina service - I had no experience with
them until yesterday. My co-owner called them at 3:05 in the afernoon.
A guy answered the phone, "hullo" and then proceeded to tell him they
were closed for the day. Not encouraging but will keep trying.

Joe

I've just installed a 17" Palsonic with DVD here in Australia. Other
brands are Radio Shack and Teac (Akai) but I am not sure about 19" with
a 12 V power pack. The 17" LCD TVs draw about 4 A from the ship's
battery, which is quite a lot. A 19" TV will draw even more (estimate
about (19 / 17)^2 * 4 = 5A) as it's the light source that draws most of
the power. We tried a 19" Sansui with DVD but it looked too big for the
boat. (It is AC powered.) I mounted it on the starboard bulkhead and
bolted the TV mount through the bulkhead. Cables run through a 22 mm
(7/8") hole drilled through the bulkhead to the forward cabin. Be
careful that you mount the TV so that there is room to load the DVD!

I also installed a Telefunken DVB-T set top box for standard definition
digital television. This box is little more than the size of a pack of
cigarettes and it is velcro'd to the bulkhead in the forward berth. A
small cable carries the sensor for the remote which I've blue-tacked to
the front of the TV. I bought the Telefunken from e-bay. But ... the
specs say that it should draw 120 mA but it is a lot more than that as
it gets too hot to touch. Oh well, back to the seller ...

I use a Sigtec (or something like that) marine antenna with built in
pre-amp powered from a little box also mounted on the bulkhead.

I also bought a 300 W inverter (A$80 = US$60) which works well. Next
job is to connect the ship's 12 V to the TV, set top box and pre-amp.

The TV works really well either analog or digital.

Kirk,
Where did you install the second vent fitting? Did you "T" the line?

I had to do the same thing with my propane vent line. There was a low
spot which always filled with water, making the vent useless. I
installed a second vent fitting to allow me to straighten out the line.

Another thing to check - Make sure there are no low spots before the

Useless. Just because you can pour water into the propane locker and see

Adam,

After I purchased my boat fall of 2005, I turned on the propane at the
tank to do a leak test. A half-hour later the boat started to smell of
propane. Using soap I discovered the brass Tee fitting (at the top of
the tank) has a crack (which I could only see with a magnifying glass).
I replaced it. Next spring I washed out the propane locker and it would
not drain (dust and spider webs). I now clean this locker a few times a
season and make sure water drains out that vent cap at the Port side of
the transom. I was lucky the boat did not blow up. This drain vent,
which is very important, clogs easily.

While pumping out yesterday I got a good look at the boat's stern which
I normally don't see. There was a large amount of rust coming out of
the ventilator cap on the port transom. (I have hull 218.) This is the
same type of vent cap that is used for the head vent.

Does anyone know what the vent on the port transom close to the water
connects to?

I got a Toshiba 15 inch flat screen TV/DVD at Best Buy last year. I
found that a 20 inch was to big. I also bought a articulating arm
that allowed me to mount the TV above the NAV Station it folds away
flat. It runs on AC or DC and I can also hook my lap top to it.

I also think that audiovox makes one that will do what you are looking
for.

Suggest you contact Catalina. At the factory tour a few years ago
during the Marina del Rey Rendezvous, Gerry Douglas announced that they
were using a new material for the galley floor and we could upgrade when
ready. Now trying to get service from the CA Catalina's Parts Dept. may
not be worth the effort... They are absolutely the last call that I
make although I have not tried them since they moved the C320 to
Florida. Warren Pandy in FL has been very responsive with one query I
had to him so it may be worth a try.

Dear Barbara and Bob Uhlman:

I was correctly chastised for my response to you about over analyzing
and just told you to buy the boat and go sailing. Some on the list
thought my comments about sailing over 1000 miles in 51 times out was
bragging.

I was rude and I apologize. What I tried to say--and I ended up saying
it rudely and not well--is that there are really no problems with the
boat. If you read the list long enough you will feel that you need to
buy an expensive new folding prop, a stainless steel prop shaft, new
motor mounts, a different anchor windlass, a Honda generator, a fancy
inverter, a new battery charger, new hatches, new head hoses, etc. My
point is that you DON'T. In eight years I have replaced the battery
charger, the roller furling, and two batteries and the steering
quadrant. That is it for "major" repairs. No fancy prop, no inventers,
nothing fancy.

Yet, in spite of this I sail my boat more than 90% of the people on the
list either by days out or by mileage. What I tried to say, and again I
apologize for the rudeness, is that it is a great boat and the best way
to judge that is to go sailing on one. If you live anywhere near San
Francisco Bay I would be honored to personally apologize and take you
sailing.

I am especially interested in issues affecting operating systems
(engine, electrical, head, tanks, etc.), the hull, deck and windows
(hull blisters, window leaks, etc.), and rigging including sails.

Thanks!

Dear Jeff:

I guess it was kind of rude, and I apologize. My point was that
everyone over analyzes, over worries, over talks, over everything but it
seems that very few people over sail the boat.

I do beg to differ with you. When I bought the boat I didn't worry
about the electrical system, the engine system, the anything system.
That was the job of the surveyor. What I worried about was how well she
sailed. I talked with other 320 owners and what I found was that they
sat a dock a lot and didn't sail much so I insisted on an all day test
sail so that I could try the boat in all sorts of conditions. It was
not the first 32 foot I took on a test sail, but it certainly was the
best one in terms of sailing performance. That was the prime factor.
The secondary factor was that my wife loved the large fixed table (which
so many on this list hate) because the family could all sit around it.

No, I didn't worry about the systems. I know that I am weird, but I
didn't really ask a lot of questions about the boat. The question I had
was "How well does it sail?" I was not trying to brag about the number
of sails and the mileage, I was trying to point out that it was a great
boat to sail and not one that you have to worry about before you use it
every week.

What I thought was unusual about this prospective 320 buyer was he
didn't say: "I am thinking of buying a 320 and I live in the ______.
Could someone take me sailing?"

But, you were correct, I was rude to the potential buyer and for that I
apologize, and if he wants to go on an apology sail I am going out this
weekend.

Hi Adam,

I have to say, that isn't particularly helpful to a new potential
buyer.
;) If the list had responded to my similar questions back in 2000 this
way, I'm pretty sure I'd have signed off and own a different boat today.
Even if they end up buying the boat, we need them to join the
association and feel welcome.

If I were looking to buy a new boat and asked this kind of first-time
question and got this kind of response, I'd be a bit offended. Since
they aren't likely to know much of the history of this group, we'll be
lucky if they take it in the light spirit you intended.

We should all be especially sensitive to the questions of new potential
owners. Most people wouldn't even contemplate a casual purchase of
something like a 90K boat without asking lots of questions. Neither
would you. :)

As for the 1100 miles, My boat spent only 4 mos in the water last year
because of spring storms/marina damage and drawbridge failure in late
september and I did around 1000 miles and I was only out about 10 times.
:)

So... Since you spend so much time on your boat, how about providing
some
*helpful* answers to his questions? :) :)

You worry too much. You consider too much. Buy the boat, take it
sailing. A sailboat in the dock won't break but that is not what a
sailboat is for.

I took my boat out 51 times last year sailing nearly 1100 miles. I am
trying to break that this year. Any other questions about the systems?

Where do you live, someone on this list will take you for a test sail.

I am especially interested in issues affecting operating systems

The question I had
was "How well does it sail?" I was not trying to brag about the number
of sails and the mileage, I was trying to point out that it was a great
boat to sail and not one that you have to worry about before you use it
every week.

Hi Bruce
re comment "the exhaust elbow must have been leaking".

Yes, I had a similar leak and on reflection belive that was the source
of
the problem.
Hope the lubrication does the job.

Thanks for the help on my battery charger/inverter question. I have not

purchased them yet, but per the list suggestions [Karl] I did install
golf cart
batteries. Not 4, but just 2 on switch position 1, and a starting
battery on
switch position 2. Everything fit very nicely, was not expensive, and
will
meet my needs of a small house bank for day sailing and ocassional over
night
trips and with a proper starting battery. Thanks again, Paul

What do people recommend for cleaning the bronze prop shaft (the water
end)? I've used Scotchbrite pads the last few years but last year it
didn't work very well. If sandpaper is my next step, what grit? I'm
assuming I need to be careful because I'm guessing bronze is relatively
soft as metals go.

I've never worried too much about a shiny smooth bronze shaft but I do
want to be certain that at least the area under the shaft zinc is shiny.
I'm thinking it probably wasn't the last year or two and the shaft took
a minor hit. The zinc definitely took a major hit.

Bill,
What do you mean by the zinc took a hit. I've used 100 grit on the
shaft, hand sanding you should be fine. The smother you get it and the
prop the harder it is for the criters to set up home.
