[C320-list] On-board Portable Generator

I recently purchased a small (1200 watt) portable generator to have  on-board 
for anchoring out.
 
The manufacturer recommends grounding the generator while in-use to prevent  
static build-up and shock hazard.
 
Does anyone have any experience or how-to suggestions ? 
 
I suppose one could dangle a wire into the water to do this, but I thought  I 
would show my lack of electrical knowledge and ask the group for  suggestions.
