I would think that for the weight of this sail, the friction would be quite severe....

Mike -
I had 4 straps break this season.  Jury rigged them with cable ties.  Never 
liked the way the slides were attached in the first place. I always  thought

the slides had a tendency to twist making raising the sail difficult. At
the 
end of the season I took the sail to a local sailmaker and had the straps  
replaced with a regular attachment. The attachment at the battens looks very

strong. Should make raising the sail much easier next year.
