>From time to time my ST4000 does the same thing, not often, and now that I think about it, it ussally is to port, interesting....

It may happen 2 or 3 times a year, with no consitent place or pattern. I keep everything in the same place with no metal etc near the fluxgate head (below deck in aft cabin.).? I do notice that The air horn can will effect the binical compass if placed near it.
