In researching the holding tank issue ala "odors" a few years ago, I came
across a web site authored by a woman who is much revered by the RV people.
One of the points she made is that smells may come from a lack of aerobic
bacteria in the holding tank. When there is insufficient air flow
circulating in the tank only the anaerobic guys survive and they are the
ones that generate the odors (methane, etc.) She recommends that the vent
hose and vent opening should be larger than what we typically find on our
boats. Was it one inch or 3/4? I don't remember. Just that it should be
larger than what we have.

In addition to using only fresh water flush, we started using Odorlos
(odorlos.com) each time we pump out. We no longer have head odors in or out
of the boat. That doesn't mean that our S*$# don't stink, only that we and
our boating friends no longer have to endure it.

It's comes from an overfilled holding tank. As Pat says and something I
always do take a hose and flush it out good while pumping out the tank.
Keeps odors from coming out when flushing the head. If I smell something
when someone is flushing the head it's always a clogged vent.
Keep it clean and open!

Has anyone had a problem with a clogged holding tank vent? I was told it?s
a good idea to drill out the small vent hole at the base of the stanchion to
a larger diameter. Has anyone done this?

Thanks!
