 I learned this from an old salt and have done it many times. Stitch (the ends) your new halyard to the old one. Has to be end to end to pull through properly and do a good job not just a couple of stitch. After you have finished sewing pull on the two halyard you'll know if it is going to break. You can even put a thin layer of tape over it when finished.  Pull through slowly;
Good luck,  JOHN  Holokai 2

PS: I think I have seem pictures of this online ( somewhere).

Any ideas on how to run a new main halyard when there is no messenger line in
the mast? Is this a job for a rigger?

I climbed up there and tried but could not get the new messenger or halyard to
run down the mast.

I won’t go into the details on why I need to do this… lets just say the trimmer
was a little over zealous on the hoist and at 6’ 2” and 240 lbs of muscle, I was
a little reluctant to smack him upside the head.
