Just out of idle curiosity, has anyone tried something like the BOSE noise
canceling headsets to sleep below while the motor is running?

Brian,

I ordered 14 tiles--covered top and sides of both shells. The 14 tiles were
about 1.5 too many but I wanted and extra in case I made a mistake. They do
not bend around the corners so you have to fit them so they butt up against
each other at turns. The glue sticks fine and there is no need for extra
hardware on the top. You do have to cut out and tape a section for clearance
around the alternator pulley. You can buy some silver tape at WM to cover
this area when you cut it out so the foam doesn't crumble. I also used this
tape to cover the seams--

A couple of other points--

--cleaned the interior with denatured alcohol..no problem with sticking

--you need to get the tile right the first time--the glue is tenacious with
no ability to pull off and reset. I recommend making cardboard templates to
fit. You will need a utility knife with lots of blades as the glue sticks to
the blade quickly

--The covers will become substantially heavier so I installed handholds on
the shells to make it easier to move them BEFORE you install the tiles

--Overall I am glad I added but for me it did not dampen the sound as much
as I hoped it would. I think the reason is primarily due to the design of
our boats. There is a lot of open space where the sound can travel--for
example under the shaft area and under the aft cabin in general..one other
thing on my list to hopefully improve quietness is to add gaskets around the
edges of the shell...

Hope this helps..good luck...

Mr Updike:

I contacted Sailor Solutions today at the link you supplied, and they
confirmed that they ship to Canada. I intend to order now for a spring
pre-launch install. Could you confirm for me how many tiles you used,
whether the number is for both front and rear engine covers, and includes
the inside tops of each, and whether the adhesive is strong enough to stick
to the cover tops or if it is necessary to screw these in place?

Having done the install, did you find the effort worthwhile and that the
noise reduction was satisfactory? What did you use to clean the cover
interiors and prepare them for the tiles? Were the tiles sufficiently
flexible to adhere around the curved corners of the covers? Once installed,
do the covers still clear the engine external moving parts?

For this relief, much thanks.
