A couple years ago I switched to a household sink drain gasket. Works great.

Martin,

Occasionally mine is a little stubborn as I use teflon paste to seal them.
I've had success with the rubber strap wrenches that Sears sells...I use the
bigger one--mostly to save my hands...

Hi all

Had another go at getting the aft water tank inspection cap off this weekend
with a strap wrench and still couldn't budge it.

I was using a small strap wrench similar to the smaller one on this rona web
site:
http://rona.ca/shop/~strap-wrench-set-magigrip-62245_!strap-wrench_shop

So my next step is to go and buy a bigger more robust strap wrench.  I think
the rounded teeth around the edge of the cap are preventing the wrench from
getting a good purchase, plus there isn't much room to work around the cap
because of the way the tank is seated under the aft birth.

So was wondering if anyone else has come across a better
tool/gadget/technique for these tricky type of removals.

It's not absolutely necessary that I get in there, but I'd really like to
take a look before I start drinking the water, and its kind of become a
personal battle now, the first of many I'm sure!

Thanks
Martin

Probably a silly question, but should it be possible to open the 'cap' in
the top of the water tanks.

Set about sanitizing my water system over the weekend using the instructions
in the Catalina manual, given that the boat is new to me and not sure when
it was last done.

Wanted to peak inside the tank by opening the main cap on top, but couldn't
budge it.  Will maybe take a strap wrench to it next time I'm on board, but
wanted to check and make sure it is supposed to move!?  On my #1023, its a
grey cap, about 3inch diameter with course 'teeth' around the edge.

I'm guessing it's probably similar to this:

Maybe those gaskets are why I couldn't undo by hand.

Thanks

Martin
