[C320-list] Electrical Engine Alarm problem

Bruce,

Here's what I discovered on my boat which may or may not apply to your
situation. My audible alarm was somewhat flakey in that sometimes it would
sound when the igintion key was ON and sometimes it wouldn't. I opened the
engine control pod and found that the alarm unit was one rated for 24 volts.
I did a little research and found that there is a 12V version of the same
unit (not sure why Catalina or their subcontractor installed a 24V version).
The part number was Intervox BRP4535S-24-CD (the 24 indicates 24V unit) and
I replaced it with an Intervox BRP4535S-12-CD (a 12V unit). The part spec
sheet says that either one operates down to 4V but it would seem that the
12V unit would be the correct chioice for a 12V system. I found the part at
Allied Electronics for only $5.82 (this can't possibly be a 'boat part"!!)
but by the time I ordered it online the shipping and handling made it about
$20.00. (This is more like it!) Anyway, I installed it a couple of weeks ago
and it works but I haven't really tested it out too many times.

I also learned an interesting fact that maybe everyone here already knows.
The unit (either the 12V or 24V) has two inputs, when one is grounded it
emits an continuous alarm (usually connected to water over temp switch) and
when the other input is grounded it emits an intermittent alarm, (usually
the oil under pressure alarm). There is 3rd input that is the switched 12V
source.
