Re. the lock washers, I have an article all about fasteners written by some
engineer that seemed to have experience. One point he made is that lock
washers are a waste of time and money preferring the nylon insert type of
locking nut. However, according to the author, nylon lock nuts are a single
use item as their locking attributes are greatly diminished after the
initial use. He does advocate the use of flat washers for securing nuts;
but, only a hard flat washer of compatible metal. 

Interesting article but maybe more for aircraft and military specs than rec.
boats.
