[C320-list] C320-list Digest, Vol 644, Issue 1

John M -

I purchased a C320 last month (hull #67) and asked my surveyor about the area around both the strut and shaft exit. As he explained it to me, the area around both the strut and shaft exit are "faired" after the propulsion system is installed. This is necessary so as to provide enough clearance at these two points to allow the propulsion system to be properly aligned. Both the strut and shaft exit have a square area on the outside of the hull where the material is 'fairing compound' which is different from the adjoining (and balance) of the hull. If your 'visible seam' is a straight line either offset from or square around the strut and shaft exit, most likely you are seeing the hull / fairing interface. A 'visible seam' is OK; minor surface cracks or defects are probably OK, but if more serious need to be repaired, which is not difficult given that this is not an appearance surface and gets covered by bottom paint. Best advice, find a boat you like without any fatal flaws (example: obvious water damage inside), then have a surveyor confirm and deduct the repairs from the purchase price. Every boat (brand new or previuosly enjoyed) has issues needing repair ... just need to stay away from fatal flaws like rotted decks on a used boat ... and know the other defects are easily repaired. Around Lake Michigan, a prepurchase survey runs about $500 from a AMS certified surveyor. Alan
