[C320-list] C320-list Digest, Vol 662, Issue 1

Tom,
Although we are not in Florida, that is where I learned to sail, built my
first boats and weathered several direct hits. I have also experienced three
direct hits and numerous close passes here in NC while owning boats that
normally remain in the water including one storm that put Commitment into a
cypress swamp. I would suggest a visit to the Boat US website. There is a
lot of hurricane prep information to be found there as well as objective
recommendations about how to minimize damage based on quantitative
comparisons of the factors of different storms and different practices at
different locations.

I have had Commitment on a mooring three times, ashore twice and in her slip
for most of the near misses. A welded 5/8 stainless steel mooring ring broke
at the weld in Category-1 Ophelia which resulted in her trip into the swamp.
I normally shackle the anchor chain directly to the mooring chain, but was
working solo after the winds had reached gale force and took the easy way
out to my regret.

It is easier to haul and it is the recommended practice, so that is what I
have done ever since even though I keep my storm mooring maintained and
inspected.

Hope some of this is what you are looking for.
