Your statement has left questions for me.  
 
Why wouldn't you use Target for the sole or companion way steps?  And what would you and others recommend for these areas?

Target does not recommend using foam or natural bristle brushes. They
recommend a good quality short stiff polyester brush. Instruction on can and
on website. Nice product. Not for soles or companionway steps or for
exterior.
