Warren, Karl,

I'm not sure we're talking about the same product. I used the Oxford  
Hybrivar 7000 series waterborne alkyd varnish on my sole and my  
companionway steps last summer. It works great. I foam brushed and  
did some bristle brush. It laid on and finished on very nicely. My  
can says nothing about application limitations, and the website says:

Specially formulated for spray and brush-applied applications,  
Oxford® HybriVar Varnish can be wipe applied as well with equally  
traditional effects.

I used the Satin finish. Easy to use, easy to clean. Karl, if you  
have questions, call Target and talk to their guru Jeff Weiss. He is  
very helpful.
