[C320-list] PS letter from Warren Updike--

I'm knot aware of an appropriate Target product for heavy wear. That is not
to say they don't have one, I just don't know. I believe there are three
options for the companion way ladder (ladder is the proper nautical term for
steps on a boat:)

1) No finish, just apply an oil product, perhaps a teak oil or a penetrating
type sealer, not a surface finish. Someone on the list recently mentioned
this. Do a search on the Google archives.
2) A urethane finish like Ultimate Sole. Urethanes are a surface coating.
That is they don't penetrate as much as they lay on the surface with a super
strong finish. Apparently, Ultimate Sole is very good with wet feet.
3) A non-urethane or natural product finish like Waterlox which is a tung
oil varnish-like product. It is a penetrating finish of lower viscosity than
urethane. It seems to leave a thinner coat allowing more of the natural
characteristics of the wood to come through. This too, is very good with wet
feet.

Having said that, I wouldn't do any of these without first removing the
original finish and starting from bare wood. Also, don't bother doing this
job unless you also seal the underside of the plywood base (doesn't apply to
those with the "deep bilge.")

I applied four coats of Waterlox. Perhaps, I would only have applied 2 of a
urethane. The thing I liked about Waterlox besides the recommendation by
people at MinWax, is they claim the surface can be recoated without sanding.
I might even recoat with the sole in-place. I don't think I could do that
with a urethane. See the web site: www.waterlox.com

Companion Way Steps
are needing a fresh coat of Varnish ... Warren can you recommend which
varnish I should use?
I think Target Coatings are available in Sydney.
