[C320-list] Throttle

We have the Westerbeke on hull # 322 -- after lubricating the throttle 
cable it works more freely but now won't hold full throttle position 
without spontaneously backing off to 2000 rpm -- can easily hold it at 
full throttle -- is there a tension adjustment in the system ?  Is it 
at the engine or the control end?  Not a big problem as we seldom run 
at WOT but in a blow it is a pain to hold the control full forward, 
steer and watch the road ahead all at once.

Disconnecting the throttle cable at the engine is absolutely the first 
step. I neglected this when I had a similar problem last year and spent 
several days trying to track down a non-existent cable problem. When 
the boat was hauled I had a mechanic look at the engine. The first 
thing he did was disconnect the cable at the engine and work the 
regulator by hand. He told me it was too stiff and that this is a 
common problem on older Yanmars. My recollection is that the fix was to 
replace an O-ring in the lever assembly, which apparently wears out 
over time and causes binding. It was not an expensive repair, at least 
not compared to all of the other boat units I dropped at the same time 
getting my batteries upgr
aded, water heater replaced, etc. 
 
BTW, in my case the stiffness added a second symptom, namely that the 
engine did not want to throttle all the way back to a proper idle. 
She's been idling much better since this fix.
