[C320-list] When do you reef?

I have found that the more critical question is the angle of the wind and
the condition of the sea state. If the seas are relatively flat (usually
for me that means the wind just sprang up) and the wind is on the beam or
forward then I can comfortably fly full sail to about 20 (full being 100%
jib and full main) while letting the traveler down about half way. If the
seas are bumpy or the wind aft of the beam I find the boat tends to round up
more if there is too much sail.

Past week flew 135 and full main in about 20 (27.4 nautical miles in 4.75
hours) knots of wind with traveler down most of the day and occasionally
having to let out the sheets when overpowered.

Furling the jib becomes a function of what size jib you have.

Note: It is far better to reef and furl early and than shake things out
than the other way around. With this in mind, reef and furl more than you
think necessary and add more sail as needed and you will so learn the
perfect combo for your local conditions.

Subject: [C320-list] When do you reef?

Hi All,

I got my 320 in the late fall and she's been on the hard through the winter
so I still have lots to learn about her.

Just wondering...at what wind speed do you reef? The 320 sails best with
minimal heel, correct? Do you ever start by lessening the sail area of your
genny before putting in a reef?

Thanks.

Kevin
