[C320-list] When do you reef?

Kevin:

There are so many variables that it is hard to generalize: wind speed,
point of sail, surface of the water, gusting/not, size of the jib,
racing/not, etc. In the summer I generally keep the first reef point in
all the time and use a 100% jib. By summer I mean April through
September when we get a LOT of wind. Sometimes during a sail I am still
overpowered and sometimes I am underpowered but generally it is ok. I
move the traveler and I partially furl the jib, depending. These
adjustments are relatively easy. Another variable worth mentioning is
crew and what you want to get out of the day with them. The more
experienced the crew the more you can delay reefing till needed. The
less experienced the crew the more you might want to reef before you
leave the harbor even if you will be underpowered much of the time.
