Adam,
You must be certain that your unit does in fact use R-12 (freon) as the refrigerant. The refrigerants--R-12, R-22, MP-39, 401-A, etc CANNOT be safely mixed. That being said, it is "easy" to re-charge the system using a guage and a supply can of freon.
If you have the same "The Cold Machine Installation and Operating Manual" dated 4/94 at the bottom left. Page 2 has a picture of the 'typical completed installation' at the top.
Looking at the picture, move your finger one inch to the left and you should notice a black tube (line). This is the inlet suction valve. The guage and supply freon attach there.
If the unit is full and stable (not been running for 15-20 minutes) the pressure should be around 75 pounds--anything less will indicate a need to re-charge.
With the supply and guage correctly connected, turn the unit on and verify that the compressor and fan are running. Insert some freon just a little and close the supply to see what temperature is indicated on the guage---keep doing this until the teemperature is around -17 F. The unit should now be okay for another several years unless the leak is getting worse. Good Luck

Thank you very much. I have the brochure that came with the unit and it
says that the unit was fully charged at the factory. Where/how do you add
the R-12.
I thought I had controller problems years ago because the unit would cut off
in hot days. Turned out to be a lack of ventilation at the compressor which
we remedied by adding some vent holes. I was looking at the controller this
afternoon in a Defender catalog. Amazing how it costs about 33% of an
entire new unit.
I am going to trying charging first and then see what happens.
Thank you for your guidance and advice. It is very helpful.
Adam
