I placed an inquiry with Sabre-Perkins and got a reply via Perkins Power NE,
in NJ. A very nice man, Ike, chatted with me about the oil. He says that
any of the oils on the shelf today rated for heavy duty diesel are
appropriate for use. So don't worry about the API classification unless you
are pulling oil out of your father's garage. Anything better than class
"CD" is OK for the Perkins. He personally favors Rotella oil that I've
heard is very good. Maybe find it at Walmart.

He emphasized the importance of using a biocide (I favor Startron,) and an
additive to improve lubricity. Current diesel fuels are very low in sulfur
and lubricity. I've been using an additive since I heard the Yanmar guy at
the boat show recommend it.

Oh, the Perkins (Detroit Diesel) Manual specifies oil weights by temp.
range. I use 15W40 which is good for 14 degF to 122 degF. Anyone out
sailing outside of that range deserves to have a hard starting engine.

So, there you have it. I suspect your Yanmar guy will tell you the same
thing. No need to stress over oil selection unless you have a newish
engine. In that case, be sure to follow the mfgr's specification.

Interesting to know dept: Ike also told me that the older Westerbeke engines
also had Perkins blocks, as do the current small block Volvo-Penta engines.
I guess Perkins isn't going out of business anytime soon.

Also interesting to know: Sabre-Perkins has been owned by Caterpillar for
maybe 7 years.
