Bernie, let us know how many hours you have, how well maintenance was done
(reg. oil changes,) and why you feel a rebuild/replace is called for.

As was pointed out, a repower will be much more expensive. If the head,
block, heat exchanger, and H-P fuel pump, are in good order all the rest can
be replaced with a rebuild. Replacing the high-pressure fuel pump will
probably add a lot to the job.

The Perkins 103 block was essentially a tractor engine with a good
reputation for longevity. It's probably more important that you find a
factory qualified mechanic than a marine mechanic not familiar with the
Perkins.

Check-out www.perkins-sabre.com as they have a location in NW: Perkins
Pacific Inc. 7215 South 228th Street, Kent, Washington, 98032. They may be
able to point you to dealers in the area that can do a rebuild.

The first approx. 140 C320s were Perkins. I've not seen one complaint about
the engine on this list in 5 years. All of the ones I know about are still
running.

If you decide to rebuild I recommend replacing the transmission with the
next size larger. If you do that, you should shorten the shaft as the larger
transmission will make that necessary. You might also consider a flexible
coupling and consider replacing the shaft with ss. Of course, replace the
motor mounts and strut bearing at that time. The flex coupling should also
eliminate some of the engine/shaft noise.

All of we owners of the vintage 320s will be interested in your decisions
and experiences.

Subject: [C320-list] FW: Repowering- engine choices

Hi folks,

Ok given the dearth of advice on rebuilding our old Perkins engine, we are
looking at repowering. I am thinking about 3 options:

A) Volvo Penta D1-30

B) Universal M-25XPB

C) Yanmar 3YM30

Apart from costs, and resale value, I am also looking for quietness, as in
the summer we end up having to do a fair bit of motoring due to light winds
here in the Pacific N/W.

So what are folks thoughts on these repowering options (think I might be
opening floodgates here)!

Regards
Bernie
