Sam,

Once you do get it clean and let it dry completely, try using Transducer Paint on it. 

I use this on my depth transducer in the spring, and on the speedo to keep the marine critters off.

My knot meter discontinued working and found the problem to be crud in the wheel. I cleaned it with my knife, but not to my satisfaction. Is there anything that can dissolve these crust ?  Mariah #585
