Put the paddlewheel in a cup and add enough vinegar to cover the wheel, 
allow it to soak overnight and all the crud is gone or soft enough to be 
easily cleaned off.

My knot meter discontinued working and found the problem to be crud in the 
wheel. I cleaned it with my knife, but not to my satisfaction. Is there 
anything that can dissolve these crust ?  Mariah #585
