Robert,
Sorry in my BlackBerry brevity I probably made it confusing. I only took one wire off to open the circuit and see what would happen. There are only two wires and the 36" pressure tube attached to the thermostat.  I believe it is meant to be an open when no cooling required and closed when cooling required.  Probably the pressure sensor is broken or the tube has a hole? 

We got home today and survived by turning it on and off manually every once and a while.  When I was playing around with it I was surprised at the temperature of the two coolant tubes.  I guess I expected them to feel colder and warmer.

Its odd that the fridge started to run when you connected only one wire.
That would point a wiring problem. If the lead you connected is grounded the
fridge control unit might see it as a demand for cooling.  Take an ohm-meter
(with the thermostat disconnected) and check each thermostat connection to
battery ground.  Both connections should be high resistance.
