Paul, I've decided to not use the speedo any more. Instead, I'm planning on
using the CruzPro SOG1 about $100. It converts a NEMA 0183 SOG value to a
paddlewheel output. You get to use your speed display and wind instrument
true wind speed as well. It's actually better than speed thru the water
because is your true speed over ground. 

I'll report back on the project once done.

Allan,

I would like to replace the boat speed unit.  Mine has not worked correctly
for several years in spite of cleaning, checking, etc.

Do I contact Catalina or do you have another recommendation ?

I've looked into installing one, but the diameter of the exhaust is too
mall--at least for my boat. I called the manufacturer and discussed with
hem, but they told me they don't make one that small. I checked into this a
ouple of years ago, so perhaps something has changed??
