[C320-list] Jib Replacement, was Re: Catalina Direct

Sta-set is a good line, but it might be a little stretchy for a jib or main
halyard. Better for a spinnaker/gennaker halyard. Sta-set X may be a little
better choice initially, but it's harder to splice and will eventually
stretch about as much as Sta-set. A little stronger, though. When a halyard
stretches, the draft in the sail moves aft, increasing heeling force and
decreasing driving force. Is it really that noticeable? Hard to say.

I replaced my jib halyards with 5/16 Aracom-T, a Technora core/polyester
cover line which is probably no longer available. Great close out deal from
West Marine. It's stronger and lighter than Sta-set, with almost no stretch.
I think there may be an article on the website, authored by sailmaker Mark
Yeager from Quantum sails in Texas. His primary topic is sail inventory for
racing, but he makes some helpful comments on the value to cruisers of
upgraded halyards. He's particularly critical of the Catalina OEM halyards,
which I believe to be UULS. Layline is a good source of experience as well.

Another option, if you're willing to put some sweat equity into it, is to
simply replace the core of your OEM halyard with 1/4" Amsteel Blue ($1.07 at
Redden Marine) or Vectran. It's easier than you think and produces an
excellent halyard with a breaking strength of 8600 pounds, nearly twice the
original. I did this with a racing jib halyard and it's the best one in my
inventory.

For some reason my emails are bouncing from the list. This is why I am
trying a reply. Not to step on anyone's message.
I would like to replace my jib halyard, am a cruiser, not a racer. Looking
at Sta-Set 3/8" $0.79/foot. Any recommendations appreciated.

Has anyone had an issue with Catalina Direct?

I ordered a tachometer in March. It was charged to my credit card promptly,
but as of today, almost two months later, no tachometer.

I've followed up by phone twice. The calls were handled courteously
promising to look into the issue and call me back by the next day. No return
call was ever made.

Anyone know the president of the company and how he or she may be contacted?
