You take the length of packing and wrap it around the shaft and
the cut it straight with a razor knife. When done you should have
three pieces cut exactly the length you need.

How do you know the lengths needed for the replacement pieces?  Problem is, my 
bilge pump is dead.    By the way west marine is out of those.  I am trying to 
keep tomorrow me from being mad at today me.

I have done this a couple of times and for me it is hard to say maybe a couple 
of gallons at that most...much  depends on how long it takes you to get the old 
stuff out.  I wrap the leaking side with a an old rag to slow things down ...and 
have my shop vac ready  to catch some of the water as well.......

Key is to have everything ready to go....  have the new pieces measured and cut 
and all the tools laid out as well..
