I believe the failurewas due to dried salt and dirt along with no way to  
flush it out.  Low dust and fresh water should substaintually increase the  
service life.

Bear went in to service in the summer of 2000. She has only sailed The Great
Lakes and further north and hence her furler has experienced only fresh
water and short summer seasons with winters down and covered. As of last
fall, the furler seem to be working fine. Is the bearing failure related to
salt water, longer seasons or other usage parameters such that I can predict
my furler's own failure (I seem to be overdue) and plan accordingly?
