[C320-list] Head smell discoveries

For what it's worth, here is a recipe for cleaning the holding tank. We
clipped this from a magazine, maybe Sail, a few years ago. We use it every
year in the fall before haul out. How well it works I can't say as our
holding tank has no inspection port.

Holding Tank Recipe

Ingredients:

2C Calgon Water Softener
1C liquid laundry detergent

Add two cups water softener in 1 gal. hot water. Pour/pump mixture into
tank. Add one cup detergent to 1 gal. hot water. Pour/pump mixture into
tank.

Let sit for several hours, then top off tank with fresh (hot if possible,)
water, and let sit for a few more hours. It's even better to sail with the
tank full to thoroughly agitate the mixture in the tank. Pump out and
rinse/pump with fresh water. Your tank will now be free of much of the
bottom sludge, and ready for a long Winter nap.

Tip: Recreation vehicle stores may carry a wand that attaches to a hose to
provide a high pressure spray. Use this in the inspection port of the tank
then rinse, pump again with fresh water.

John:

A few years ago, I had the yard install an inspection/cleanout port on the
top of our tank -- similar to one that came with our old 30-foot Cape Dory.
I don't use it often but I find that it's good to have. For one thing, it's
a good way to flush the tank with fresh water if you want to do that before
haul-out. The port is about 5 inches in diameter.
