You may want to purchase a socket drive #2 phillips screw bit for your
socket set.  That lets you use a socket extension and handle to apply
considerable torque on the compass mounting screws.  And if you get your
body above the binnacle, you can apply enough axial force to hold the bit in
the screw slotts so the bit does not slip out and round off the drive
surfaces.  We had two screws that were easy, one that was tough, and one
that really wanted to stay in the binnacle.  Used spray penetrating lube,
which helped some.
