In the winter 2012 issue of the Mainsheet page 38 there is a good article on anchoring; the use of a kellet is discussed and I've been using one for years. I've recently replaced it( an 8# mushroom anchor) with a 12# exercise weight which has a handle on it and is coated in a soft plastic which minimises damage to the hull, I got it at Wal-mart for $30. The handle makes it easy to attach to the rode with a karabiner. If you try it I think you'll be impressed with the results.
