Bob,
Thanks for your feedback.  I concur with what the manual says but on my system 
the foil clearly extends well past the stop pin, down the torque tube and either 
touches or nearly touches the top of the turnbuckle.   Because the the 
cylindrical nature of the Catalina turnbuckle the bottom edge of foil meets the 
top of the turnbuckle in a parallel fashion.  Therefore the turning effect of 
the foil assembly and lower unit would not catch or bind like they could on an 
open-bodied beveled turnbuckle.  The cotter pins would keep the turnbuckle from 
rotating.  The amount of revolutions required to furl and unfurl, done in light 
air or into the wind to reduce furling system stress, is also not enough to 
produce a significant amount of ware on the two surfaces, if they are touching.
Since I now have a hole in my torque tube where the stop pin used to be, I 
intend to shorten the stop pin so in doesn't touch the forestay cable and 
reinstall it.

Mike-On my Schaefer 2100 system on hull 894 (2002) the manual shows that the 
stop pin stops the foil from coming down and possibly touching the turnbuckle.  
The clamp on the top of the torque tube keeps the foil in place and the stop pin 
is insurance that the foil does not go down if the clamp ever gets loose.  I 
would not let the foil rest on the turnbuckle and possible turning it when 
furling or unfurling the genoa.  Worst case is the turnbuckle could eventually 
come undone and the mast might come down.

When reassemblying after adjusting the turnbuckle, the manual says to raise the 
foil above the stop pin by wrapping a halyard around it to help do this, tighten 
the clamp on the foil and then screw in the pin stop until it is flush with the 
outside of the torque tube.  The pin does not screw into the foil.  The clamp 
keeps the foils in place.

I would raise the foil above the stop pin hole, tighten the foil with the torque 
tube clamp and then screw the stop pin in to the torque tube. Everything should 
be good.

Early this spring I disassembled the lower drum assembly on my Schaefer to due
some PM and check the bearings. I have never done this to this system and the
unit was laying on the ground and not under any load or stress, I have also had
no issues with Schaefer furler in the past. Following the manual, I
disassembled the lower unit without issue and I adjusted the Catalina
turnbuckle located inside. When I reassembled the lower unit the stop pin would
not thread all the way into the Torque tube. I could see that the stop pin was
hitting a foil assembly. No matter what I did I could not find the old hole in
the foil to accept the stop pin completely and I concluded that after adjusting
the turnbuckle the old hole had now shifted inside the torque tube and I would
need to drill a new one; which I did. After we launched, I notice that the
Schaefer furler now had a very noticeable bind in one spot while rotating.
Following some choice descriptive words, best not identified for this discussion
group, that I focused at myself, I concluded that I must have tighten the stop
pin to tight and it was binding against the forestay. I removed the stop pin
and hallelujah my Schaefer spins as it once did. Now after all this verbage you
have got to wonder what the hell is my question, which is: What does the stop
pin do ? According to the manual it keeps the foils from falling down the
touque tube and riding on the forestay turnbuckle. In my system the foils
already ride on the top of the turnbuckle and maybe this is what Catalina
intended since their turnbuckle have a neat cyclinder shape and therefore would
not bind like a foil could on a typical beveled-headed turnbuckle. Have I quess
right and feedback ?
