[C320-list] REPLACING LIFE LINE STANCHIONS

Oboy! Allen Field's worst nightmare, steering cables, may be equaled by
stanchion problems.
I just did two on our #62 (1993 manufacture.) I did the first one port side
after the bow pulpit, and the second one stbd side. The latter was a real
bitch. I used a tool called a crow's foot wrench. This is a tool that
provides a right-angle grab on a nut. It's kind of like an under-the-sink
wrench for faucets. Search "crows foot" on harborfreight.com. I was only
able to turn the nut 10 or 20 deg before repositioning the wrench.
On the stbd side, I ended-up using a Dremel tool to cut away enough of the
liner so the nut could be accessed from directly below with a std. socket
wrench. Even then, I had to fasten the washers and nut together with a dab
of butyl rubber so that they could be installed in one go with the socket
wrench. Oh, and I did use butyl rubber to bed them.
Now, if you've read this far you must have at least a smidgen of interest.
So, here is the real problem; and, hopefully, on newer versions Catalina did
it differently. Excess strain on the stanchion caused the problem. The
construction of the deck where the stanchion bolt passes through is: deck
fiberglass, balsa core, liner (and the liner is very thin.) Also, Catalina
used no backing plate, only a thin ss washer, lock washer, and nut. So, the
strain pulled the bolt up, and the washer deformed into a cup shape as it
was pulled up through the liner compressing the core. Now the stanchion is
loose. What I did is drill out the bolt hole, scrape out the soft balsa
core around the hole, covered the bottom of the hole with duct tape, and
filled the hole with filled epoxy. I then drilled a new hole and inserted
the stanchion. I made backing plates using aluminum plate (two: one with
two holes for the support bolts, one larger with one hole for the main
bolt.)
The above somewhat simplifies the process and I've probably forgotten some
of it; but, you get the point. I'll sell the boat before I have to do the
port stanchion outside the galley.
e-mail me directly if you have questions.

Subject: [C320-list] REPLACING LIFE LINE STANCHIONS

Question from David Rath, captain of s/v Sugar docked at Brewers Greenport
NY:

I am trying to remove the 2nd from the bow, port side life line stanchion,
and have found the support post nut totally inaccessible. Does anyone have
any suggestions re: how to access this nut to remove the life line
stanchion? My goal is the replace a total of 3 of these as they are bent.
The other 2 are on the starboard side 2nd and 3rd back from bow. Haven't
attempted those yet.

> A note on the pump prime...make sure both fwd and aft tanks are full of
water this makes it easier for the pump to obtain a prime. On changing the
shifter and throttle cables... there is a plastic bracket about half way
down the inside/aftside of the binnacle which grabs the cables and keeps
them out of the way of steering gear and other stuff. It is nearly
impossible to get the cables into this bracket with the binnacle stand in
place; can be done but you need to remove the steering chain sprocket to do
it! Much easier to remove the four bolts in the cockpit floor and lay the
binnacle on its side which makes the entire job much easier.

closed, or you can try sucking on one open faucet with the pump running(
similar to stealing gasoline from the neighborhood cars )---the older boys
told me about that.
