Colin,
Sorry to hear about the death of your starter.  Our year 2000 has a three position ignition switch.  The third position does not do anything except psych me out.  The starter switch should be a simple normally open single pole single throw switch.  

Once the engine starts running the RPMs should be high enough to disengage the starter's gear from the flywheel.  If that didn't happen then it sounds like you may have had something also wrong with the starter.
