we find six crew best with the symmetrical spinnaker going around the bouys but five is very doable.  all the bow person needs to do is unshackle the guy on a drop as all our lines are led aft.  we do not have the double mainsheet set up on #249. Spin is always dropped behind the genoa.  "losing time at the leeward mark" depends on what you are judging it against.  The 320 needs quite a number of additions depending on your budget to get it strictly race ready and then its still after all a cruiser-racer.  Fortunately or unfortunately for me I have a competitor friend with a C and C who is always ready to put holes in my boat as he is strictly a racer.  Me. I like the leisurely cruise home from the distance races as much as the race itself.

With a conventional spinnaker, it's hard for us to be competitive with less than five crew, and six or seven would be my preference. We can set, fly and douse the sail with four in light air, but we lose time at the marks and there isn't enough weight to sail the boat flat going upwind. Optimum performance is 10-14 knots with 7 crew. But it's good for everyone else, too, and we lose time at the leeward mark in particular, trying to get the genoa up, spinnaker down and main trimmed for upwind speed. We have two jib halyards and two spin halyards, so maybe we need to experiment there.
